The 2nd Nanjing University International Symposium Series on Frontiers of Economics in China (2023)

Call for Papers


To promote the development of the discipline of economics and keep up with academic frontiers both domestically and internationally, the School of Economics at Nanjing University is planning to host the Second International Symposium on the Frontiers of Economics. The conference aims to provide a high-level workshop-style platform for researchers in the field of economics to exchange ideas and enhance the discipline of economics in China. We are currently inviting high-quality working papers from teachers and doctoral students (postdoctoral fellows) engaged in economics research and teaching throughout the country. Our aim is to provide a pure academic exchange environment for all attendees. The objectives of the symposium include:

(1) exchanging ideas and engaging in academic discussions on submitted papers, creating opportunities for possible collaboration among participants in cutting-edge directions;

(2) exposing participants to cutting-edge research and benefiting from research questions, ideas, and arguments; and

(3) enabling participants to gain different or potentially new concepts, methods, tools, and experiences.


1. Frontiers in Theoretical Economics

 Conference theme

Topics in Micro Theory and Macro Theory, including but not limited to: (1) information economics, network economics, market design, auction theory, competition theory and game theory. (2) monetary theory and monetary policy, macro policy and bank credit, finance and debt in macroeconomics, macro policy and corporate/household behavior.  

We highly welcome papers about microeconomic or macroeconomic analysis of Chinese economy and digital economy, especially in the background of high-quality economic development.

 Conference theme

Special topics for all aspects of industrial economics, including but not limited to: (1) theory and empirical evidence related to industrial organization; (2) industrial chain competition; (3) platforms and anti-monopoly policies; (4) Digital economy and network economy; (5) Advanced industrial foundation, industrial chain modernization and industrial upgrading; (6) Industrial supervision and industrial policy.  

Special topics in all aspects of urban economics, including but not limited to: (1) theories and empirical evidence related to urban economics; (2) land control and urban housing markets; (3) urban spatial structure and urban development; (4) city size and urban system; (5) migrant population and urbanization; (6) Urban industry and agglomeration economy.

Topics include but are not limited to: innovation-driven economic growth and development theory and empirical evidence, innovation-driven industrial and enterprise organizational change theory and empirical evidence, new national system research on innovation development, global and domestic innovation network and innovation chain, science and technology and innovation resource allocation, innovation resource agglomeration and innovation cluster, national and regional technology innovation system, scientific and technological talent flow and allocation, etc.

4. Frontiers of Financial Economics

 Conference theme

Topics in Financial Economics include but are not limited to: International Finance, Financial Markets and Institutions, Corporate Finance, Asset Pricing, Financial Engineering, Insurance and Risk Management, Digital Finance and Fintech. It focuses on: (1) New areas of asset pricing with a particular focus on macrofinance, computing finance, and climate finance. Possible topics include investor heterogeneity, learning and ambiguity, new preference structures for pricing models, the use of machine learning to understand cross-sections of returns, climate change and climate change policies that can affect asset pricing markets. (2) green technology innovation in corporate finance, pricing of climate risk in financial markets, bank exposure to climate risk and their regulation, the impact of monetary policy on climate change, and broader financial policies that contribute to climate change mitigation , and (3) recent developments in theoretical and empirical issues related to financial regulation, including but not limited to regulatory interactions between financial intermediaries, or households and policymakers in various countries.

5. Frontiers of Economics of Environment and Health

 Conference theme

Topics in the field of environmental and health economics include, but are not limited to: environment and health; medical reform, medical expenditure; access to medical services and health; access to health services and health inequalities; elderly health, elderly care and elderly economic support. Among them, it focuses on: (1) Feasible environmental and energy policies: environmental and energy (E&E) policy decisions made by governments and enterprises, and how policies can be more efficient and equitable. We welcome papers examining topics such as quantitative assessment of past or potential future environmental and energy policy changes, how to improve the public appeal of cost-effective environmental and energy policies, evaluation of voluntary corporate actions such as net-zero commitments and ESG investment screening, and empirical evaluations of utility programs such as energy efficiency, load management, and pricing reform. (2) Innovation and policy challenges to address climate change: broader policies that contribute to climate change mitigation.

Lu Han

Lu Han is the Nathan F. Brand Chair Professor in Real Estate and Urban Economics at the Wisconsin School of Business. Prior to joining the faculty at UW-Madison, Han was a Professor and the Premier’s Research Chair in Productivity and Competitiveness at the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto. She currently serves as an Editor for Real Estate Economics and on the Editorial Boards for Journal of Urban Economics, Journal of Housing Economics, and Regional Science and Urban Economics.Professor Han’s research interests are at the interface of urban economics, market microstructure, industrial organization and real estate finance.

Panle Jia Barwick

The Todd E. and Elizabeth H. Warnock Distinguished Chair Professor in the Department of Economics at UW-Madison. Her expertise includes Industrial Organization, Chinese Economy, Applied Microeconomics, and Applied Econometrics with a strong interest in environmental economics. She co-founded and currently serves as a board member of Cornell Institute for China Economic Research (CICER). She is a faculty research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), editor for the Journal of Industrial Economics, associate editor for the American Economic Journal: Applied Economics, Rand Journal of Economics, and International Journal of Industrial Organization, and an editorial board member of Journal of Urban Economics and VoxChina.

Michael Guo

Professor in Finance and Deputy Director of Institute for China Development and Research.  Professor Guo has been shortlisted by Economist Magazine for “2013 Business Professor of the Year Award” for his excellence on high-quality teaching. In 2010, Professor Guo was appointed as Deputy Director for Institute of China Development and Research, establishing and managing collaborations on behalf of the school with Chinese authorities and universities that aim to encourage the development of high-quality research collaborations as well as executive training programmes and student exchange. Professor Guo has several research interests, while his main focus is on Chinese Business and Finance, Corporate Finance, and Behavioural Finance.
